Paul Murphy, MEP, was “caught” reading for the “Get Caught Reading” campaign
Strumpet City by James Plunkett, which I am reading, is an excellent novel which brings to life the experience of ordinary Dubliners in the 1913 Lockout. This was a seminal event in Irish history, which saw an attempt by the bosses of the day to destroy trade union organisation and workers’ rights and heroic resistance of workers led by Jim Larkin and James Connolly. One hundred years on, in today’s context of austerity, it has an added resonance, says Mr Paul Murphy, Member of the European Parliament, for the “Get Caught Reading” campaign.
