As MEPs, we are often away from home and for this reason reading books about our native cities can surely make us feel closer to places and sites deeply rooted in our soul.
The book, which focuses on the discovery of the city centre of Salerno gives to the reader an amazing overview of the known and unknown beauties of the city.
Each monument is described in a way to make reference to historical events, including essential information and technical documents. It is, therefore, the perfect book which meets several needs: study, passion and trips.
The book allows the reader to discover amazing palaces, theatres and backyards that have done the history and are still the heart of my native city. The reader is directly catapulted in those little streets and alleys, getting the impression to be there.
Books, like this one, are the best way to increase the social and cultural value of a thousand-year-old places, making at the same time citizens and institutions more sensitive to safeguard them.
Awareness should be raised towards new generations, considering they should be more focused to protect wonders linked to our history.
I, therefore, firmly believe that the study of art history should be encouraged through activities sponsored by schools and Institutions in order to stimulate a stronger awareness about our cultural heritage.
Reading is not only an essential tool for personal and cultural growth, but also the best way to make new generations and other people better citizens, being more aware of their cultural heritage.
I really hope that other European citizens could be interested in visiting my hometown and its great beauties.
